Guernica, Picasso’s response to the Nazi blitzkrieg
of the Basque town of Guernica on April 26, 1937, the prototype of
the indiscriminant civilian aerial bombing raids of World War II,
made a huge impression on the world’s conscience. The Cubist
fragmentation, exaggerated caricature, as well as the painting’s
cold gray palate froze the essence of horror into a monumental tableau.
Guernica was not an exercise in style but an expression of inconceivable
despair.
