Guernica (1937), Pablo Picasso

Guernica, Picasso’s response to the Nazi blitzkrieg of the Basque town of Guernica on April 26, 1937, the prototype of the indiscriminant civilian aerial bombing raids of World War II, made a huge impression on the world’s conscience. The Cubist fragmentation, exaggerated caricature, as well as the painting’s cold gray palate froze the essence of horror into a monumental tableau. Guernica was not an exercise in style but an expression of inconceivable despair.
