Hell No: Designers and War
By Steven Heller

This lecture was presented in a slightly different
form at an event in May 2003.

BEGIN SLIDE SHOW

What could artists and designers have done to influence the President not to make war? And once involved what were the options for protest? Precious little. The government learned its lessons well, certainly from the Vietnam War when virtually unlimited media access spawned grassroots antiwar protest. This time around the government maintained a monopoly on all information in and out.So one thing, and probably the only thing, that artists and designers could do was to follow their consciences, marshal their talents, and make counter propaganda.

This evening we will address some of the ways that this has and will continue to be accomplished. But before we discuss the past few months let’s briefly address how antiwar protest has been accomplished over the past few centuries. Sadly war is a recurring theme and so graphic messages opposing war and advocating peace have a long and often futile history.
