Although the AIGA building on Fifth Avenue is the headquarters for the national organization, the New York chapter only has a staff of three. The volunteer chapter board meets once per month and manages a calendar of about 25 events per year. They also administer the mentor program and other chapter initiatives. So, volunteers are always needed to help out committees for upcoming events. Even if you can only help the day of an event, it makes a big difference. Volunteering is a great way to meet the fellow designers and the presenters. And volunteers always get into events for free, of course. You can also help out in other ways: This website requires a lot of work. Volunteers can write, edit and update text; prepare images; do programming or be on call to offer assistance when the chapter administrator encounters a technical emergency (they always happen). The chapter makes an audio and video document of every presentation. Volunteers coordinate the handling of equipment (digital video recorders, audio tape, microphones, etc.) at chapter events, edit the footage, design and add title sequences, etc. Exhibitions that focus on design are featured in the AIGA gallery. Volunteers help the gallery director with installation preparation, the mounting of exhibits and text, and organize and staff the opening night reception.
