Fresh Dialogue has been an annual event of AIGA since 1984 and has an extraordinary history of participants (from Art Chantry to Tibor Kalman). The programs have all attempted to spotlight emerging talent, and a quick look over a list of presenters reveals we’ve done very well in finding the “freshest” talent in the field (wouldn’t we all love to be able to say we were at most of these talks?)

This year is no exception: Paul Sahre moderates “Spine”, which promises a “hard return” to the printed page. Jason Fulford, Leanne Shapton and Peter Buchanan-Smith all love books. They produce books. They sell books. They also love art, politics, humor and music (which is why there will be live performance by Timber!), and all forms of design.

Peter Buchanan-Smith barely graduated from S.V.A. before his senior thesis, The Speck Report, was picked up by a publisher and he was thrust into the position of Art Director at The New York Times Op-Ed page. Since then he’s been busy designing, editing and making books, including The Ganzfeld, at Monday Morning, his newly opened studio.

Leanne Shapton defies categorization. Originally from Toronto, her overlapping careers as art director (Saturday Night), editor and designer (The National Post), freelance illustrator (just about every major magazine you can think of), and book publisher (with the imprint begun with Jason Fulford, J&L) have resulted in her unique approach to collecting, illustrating, editing, and making books.

You may know Jason Fulford from his photographs for the jackets of Knopf or Random House, or his frequent contributions to Harpers or The New York Times Magazine. When not on the road to Korea, China, or Hungary, the nomadic Jason is busy printing, collecting, and editing. Like Peter and Leanne, his interests extend beyond the confines of his profession; he’s begun publishing with Leanne (J&L) to satisfy his creative impulse.

From his one-man design firm, Paul Sahre (Fresh Dialogue ’99) designs innumerable book jackets while churning out glorious silkscreen posters in a back room. Most recently, he is the designer and co-author of “Hello World: A Life in Ham Radio.”

Signed books of newly published releases on sale, plus the usual wine, cheese and good conversation.

Come and see these people, whom years from now you will wish you had seen speak, now while they are still fresh.

In 2000 Princeton Architectural Press joined with AIGA to produce the first published document of the series. Fresh Dialogue: New Voices in Graphic Design 1 and 2 have been published and 3 will be out this fall.
