His penchant for sugar, cream and bacon aside, British ex-pat Clive Piercy is as L.A. as Ed Ruscha, Charles Eames and Warren Beatty. In his new book, “Pretty Vacant,” Clive chronicles the love of his adopted hometown’s vernacular as seen through the lens of a Nikon and shot from the front seat of a red 1971 Porsche 911.

Clive Piercy is a founder, with Michael Hodgson, of the Santa Monica-based Ph.D, a design alliance. Since 1988 their work has won awards from most of the major national and international design competitions. Clive graduated with honors from Brighton College of Art in England, and was a designer at BBC Television for four years before moving to America to become Creative Director of the Rod Dyer Group. He is on the faculty of Art Center College of Design.

Small Talks are an intimate series with a diverse group of designers discussing and showing work they are passionate about, in a surrounding that allows for big conversations.
