A Jury’s selection of the best designed books and book covers published in 2002

“The art of the book unites two of man’s most cherished goals. The preservation of knowledge is linked with presentation of the noblest poetry and prose in form consistent with the significance of words.”
Joseph Blumenthal, 1952 AIGA medalist

Today, halfway through the 6th century of printed books, there is still a sense of wonder that designers can work with the same elements they have had since the beginning—26 characters, arranged in a variety of sequences and massed with an eye toward purpose and balance, illuminated with images that enhance meaning—and endow objects with freshness, vitality and purpose.

AIGA is honored to have had the opportunity to challenge leading practitioners of book design to select the best books and covers of the past year in terms of concept, innovation and visual elements. This is the most popular AIGA exhibition; we can only surmise that its popularity results from the respect designers have for those who advance the disciplined dimensions that designing books demands.
